The Inheritance- Romans 8: 16 -17

THE INHERITANCE

What God Has Promised, the World Cannot Take Away!

Foundational Scripture: Romans 8:16–17 (KJV)

“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”

You Have an Inheritance!

Good morning, Kingdom family!

Today, I want to talk about something that many believers have heard about but have not fully embraced: THE INHERITANCE!

When we hear the word inheritance, our minds often go to money, property, land, investments, or possessions left behind by someone who has passed away.

But I stopped by today to remind somebody that your greatest inheritance is not what somebody leaves you on earth. It's what Jesus Christ has already secured for you in eternity!

And here's the beautiful thing: You don't have to wait until you get to heaven to begin walking in the benefits of belonging to God!

As a Registered Nurse and Nurse Navigator, I've spent years helping individuals navigate some of life's most difficult seasons. I've witnessed families trying to understand diagnoses, treatment plans, healthcare benefits, and resources available to them.

And one thing I've learned is that you can have benefits available to you and still suffer unnecessarily because you don't know what you're entitled to receive.

My God! Isn't that just like some of us spiritually?

We are children of the Most High God, yet we sometimes live as though we have no inheritance!

We pray like orphans when God has called us His children. We walk in fear when He has promised His presence. We carry burdens that He has invited us to cast upon Him.

But today, I want to remind you: You are not spiritually bankrupt! You are an heir of God!

1. Your Inheritance Begins With Your Identity

Galatians 4:7 (KJV)

“Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”

Before you can fully understand your inheritance, you must understand your identity.

You are not an accident. You are not forgotten. You are not disqualified because of your past.

Through faith in Jesus Christ, you have been adopted into the family of God.

Think about that!

The Creator of heaven and earth calls you His child!

And when God adopts you, He doesn't place you in His family as a second-class citizen. He gives you the standing of an heir.

Some of us have spent years trying to earn what God has already made available through grace.

But salvation is not something we purchase with good behavior. It is a gift received through faith.

Ephesians 2:8 reminds us that we are saved by grace through faith.

Your inheritance begins with knowing whose you are!

2. Your Inheritance Is Incorruptible

1 Peter 1:3–4 (KJV)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you.”

Now, this scripture ought to make somebody shout!

Earthly inheritances can be lost. Money can disappear. Property can be damaged. Investments can lose value. Families can even become divided over possessions.

But Peter tells us that our inheritance in Christ is incorruptible!

That means it cannot decay.

It cannot be contaminated.

It cannot fade away.

And here's what blesses me: It's reserved in heaven for you!

Nobody can steal your reservation!

Your circumstances may change. Your employment may change. Your health may change. Your relationships may change.

But God's eternal promise remains secure.

As a Nurse Navigator, I understand that not every diagnosis comes with the outcome we desire. Not every treatment produces a cure. But even when our earthly bodies are challenged, our eternal inheritance in Christ remains our living hope.

That's why we cannot build our entire identity around temporary circumstances.

We must anchor ourselves in eternal promises.

3. Your Inheritance Includes Spiritual Blessings for Today

Ephesians 1:3 (KJV)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”

Sometimes we become so focused on what we don't have that we overlook what God has already given us.

Our inheritance in Christ includes forgiveness, redemption, access to the Father, the indwelling Holy Spirit, peace with God, and the hope of eternal life.

Jesus tells us in John 14:27 that He gives us His peace.

Romans 8:1 reminds us that there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.

And Philippians 4:7 speaks of the peace of God that passes all understanding.

Now, let me make something clear. Being an heir of God does not mean that we will never experience sickness, financial challenges, grief, or disappointment.

Even Romans 8:17 reminds us that suffering may be part of our journey with Christ.

But our inheritance means that suffering does not get the final word!

We may experience the battle, but we have not lost our identity.

We may experience the storm, but we have not lost our Savior.

We may experience temporary loss, but we have not lost our eternal promise.

4. Don't Allow the Enemy to Rob You of the Knowledge of Your Inheritance

Hosea 4:6 (KJV)

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…”

One of the greatest tragedies is to possess something valuable and never understand how to access it.

In healthcare, we call this patient education.

We explain the diagnosis, discuss the treatment, identify resources, and help patients become informed participants in their care.

Well, today, I'm doing a little spiritual navigation!

I'm encouraging you to open your Bible and discover what God has promised.

Don't depend entirely on somebody else's understanding of the Word.

Study it for yourself.

Pray over it.

Meditate on it.

Apply it to your daily life.

And remember, the Word of God is not just information. It is instruction for transformation!

5. Your Inheritance Is Also a Legacy

Psalm 78:4 (KJV)

“We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.”

Now, this part is personal to me.

As a mother, grandmother, nurse, coach, and woman of faith, I understand the importance of leaving something meaningful for the next generation.

Yes, I believe in building businesses, creating opportunities, establishing financial stability, and leaving resources for our children and grandchildren.

But hear me today!

The greatest inheritance I can leave my family is not simply what I have accumulated. It is the testimony of the God who sustained me!

I want the next generation to know that prayer works.

I want them to know that God is faithful.

I want them to know that even when life breaks your heart, God can give you the strength to keep moving.

I want them to know that their value is not determined by their bank account, their title, or somebody else's opinion.

Their identity must be rooted in Christ.

We can leave our children property, but let's also teach them principles.

We can leave them money, but let's also teach them stewardship.

We can leave them a business, but let's also leave them a testimony of faith.

Because material wealth can be exhausted, but the truth of God's Word can guide generations.

6. You Must Receive the Inheritance Through Christ

Ephesians 1:13–14 (KJV) teaches that believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the earnest of our inheritance.

That word earnest speaks of a pledge or guarantee.

The Holy Spirit is God's assurance of the glorious inheritance awaiting His people.

We don't earn salvation by our accomplishments, our church attendance, or our good deeds.

We receive salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

And then we live as people who belong to Him.

We are called to walk in obedience, love, holiness, generosity, and faith.

Not to purchase an inheritance, but because we have become members of God's family.

A Final Word From the Nurse Navigator

I want to leave you with this thought.

In nursing, we develop a plan of care based on the patient's needs, available resources, and desired outcomes.

But when I look at God's Word, I see the greatest plan of redemption ever established.

Sin created the separation.

Jesus provided the sacrifice.

Grace made salvation available.

Faith receives the gift.

The Holy Spirit seals the believer.

And eternal life is our promised hope!

Now that's a divine plan of care!

And unlike an earthly inheritance that depends on human wealth, this inheritance was secured through the finished work of Jesus Christ.

So stop living as though you have no spiritual resources.

Stop allowing yesterday's failures to define tomorrow's possibilities.

Stop measuring your worth by what you possess.

You are a child of God through Christ!

You have a Father who loves you.

You have a Savior who redeemed you.

You have the Holy Spirit who guides you.

And you have an inheritance that will never fade away.

The enemy may challenge your circumstances, but he cannot rewrite God's promise!

Today's Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving us enough to make us Your children through Jesus Christ.

Forgive us for the times we have lived beneath the understanding of who we are in You.

Open our spiritual eyes to recognize the richness of our inheritance.

Teach us to walk in faith, to trust Your promises, and to remain steadfast when life becomes difficult.

Father, help us build legacies that go beyond money and possessions. Let our children and grandchildren inherit testimonies of faith, examples of integrity, and a love for Your Word.

May we never exchange eternal treasures for temporary satisfaction.

Remind us that our greatest wealth is found in our relationship with You.

In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen!

Today's Kingdom Affirmation

I am a child of God.

I am an heir of God and a joint-heir with Christ.

My past does not cancel God's promises.

My circumstances do not determine my identity.

My inheritance is incorruptible, undefiled, and eternal.

I will walk by faith, live with purpose, and leave a legacy that honors God.

I KNOW WHO I AM, I KNOW WHOSE I AM, AND I KNOW WHAT GOD HAS PROMISED ME!

A final thought to carry with you:

Don't spend your entire life chasing an earthly inheritance while neglecting the eternal inheritance Jesus has already secured.

Scripture for further meditation: Romans 8:14–17; Ephesians 1:3–14; Galatians 4:4–7; 1 Peter 1:3–5; Colossians 1:12–14.
