My Morning with God- Proverbs 14:29

The Discipline of Patience

Proverbs 14:29 — "Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly." (NIV)

As a nurse with over 40 years in healthcare, I’ve learned that healing rarely comes quickly. Whether it’s a physical wound, emotional trauma, or spiritual pain—healing takes time, attention, consistency and above all... patience.

This verse reminds me that patience is not just a personality trait—it’s a spiritual discipline that reflects understanding. In the chaos of call lights, critical labs, and demanding families, I’ve had to make a conscious choice to slow down my spirit , take a deep cleanseing breath even when everything around me was moving at a rapid pace.

I think about the times I’ve had to sit with a patient who was angry, confused, or afraid. I learned that my calm could become their calm almost as if it were contagious . That presence, wrapped in patience, could offer more healing than any medication I administered.

But I didn’t always get it right.

There were moments I was overwhelmed . Moments I was short. Moments I let my temper speak louder than my training—or my testimony. And in those moments, I saw the “folly” Proverbs speaks of. A moment of anger can undo hours of trust.

God has gently shown me that patience isn’t passive—it’s powerful. It’s the ability to pause before reacting, to listen before speaking, to pray before deciding. In healthcare and in life, patience reveals the depth of our character and the strength of our faith.

Reflection

• What if every interaction today was filtered through the lens of patience?• What if I paused not just for my patients—but for myself?• And what if I invited the Holy Spirit into that pause?

Prayer

Father, give me the grace to be patient when it's hard. Teach me to reflect Your understanding even when I’m stretched thin. Let my presence bring peace, not pressure. Help me walk in wisdom, speak in gentleness, and serve in love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
