“When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, ‘Woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.” (John 19:26-27)
A Nurses Refletion :
At the bedside, I’ve stood with families in their most vulnerable moments-grief, fear, and sometimes, the final goodbye. In John 19:26-27, I see Jesus, even in the agony of the cross, turning outward in compassion. He notices His mother’s pain and the beloved disciple’s presence. With few words, He ensures Mary will not be alone, entrusting her to John’s care and John to hers.
As a nurse, I am reminded that true care is not just about treating the body, but tending to the soul and relationships. Jesus’ act wasn’t just about physical provision; it was about connection, dignity, and love in the face of suffering. Even in His final moments, He models what it means to see the person in front of you, to notice their needs, and to act with compassion.
Application:
• Each day, look beyond the immediate crisis to the deeper needs-emotional, spiritual, relational-of those you serve.
• Remember that caring for others, especially in their pain, is a sacred trust.
• Like Jesus, may we not be consumed by our own burdens, but open our hearts to those who need us most, offering presence, comfort, and true support
Prayer:
Lord, give me eyes to see the needs of those around me, and a heart willing to respond with compassion, even when I am weary. Help me to honor You by caring for others as You did, with selfless love and gentle presence. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right Spirit in me , Touch the bodies of moms everywhere . We request your presence in the homes , facilities and institutions. Let your presence be felt today by mothers everywhere, Amen.
